Editing is defined as the process of correcting errors such as grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and capitalisation, to enhance the clarity and effectiveness of the writing.

Put even more simply, it is the process of putting something such as a literary work into an acceptably readable form.

Proper editing can also eliminate inconsistencies in style and format as well as spelling. An example is the ‘Americanization’ (or should that be Americanisation) of the English language. While both spellings are acceptable, I prefer the second one but imagine if you used a ‘z’ in one word and a ‘s’ in the same word elsewhere in your text. This kind of inconsistency is often hard to spot when reading your own copy but your reader will no doubt pick it up straight away!

Not only do I edit for spelling, grammar, punctuation, style and format but also for readability. This is something that can significantly enhance the quality of a manuscript and I edit sympathetically. It must be remembered that the English language allows us to say the same thing in many different ways but conversely, changing just one word can alter the whole meaning of a sentence.

My service reflects my own principles, in that it's not just the accuracy of the text that is important, it's also that the text must be readable and flowing. If the text is well written, it becomes a pleasure to read and the reader will enjoy the experience and the credibility of the writer or business is not called into question.
