I have a spell checker on my computer. Why do I need you?

A spell checker is just a tool. It is unable to define the difference between "two" and "too" or between "there" and "their." It cannot determine whether a particular spelling is the correct one for the particular circumstance. Anyone who relies on their spell checker is asking for their readers to question the credibility of the actual content of the text.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, for small projects a deposit of 50% of the quote is to be paid before any work is undertaken and this will be taken off the final invoice, once the work is completed to your satisfaction.

Is the quote the final cost?

Normally yes, however, the quote offered will be for standard proofreading and editing. Any text that is deemed to need excessive correction or is of a sufficiently technical nature to require extra work, I reserve the right to negotiate a different rate.

How do I send my text for proofreading?

You can send your text to me in the following formats:

  1. By e-mail as a Microsoft Word file (as a .doc/.rtf/.txt file) or comparable word processing format.

  2. On a CD or other memory hardware as a Microsoft Word file (as a .doc/.rtf/.txt file) or comparable word processing format or PDF file.

  3. As a PDF file but I would ask that the text is double spaced and in a recognisable font such as ‘Arial’ or ‘Times New Roman.’

  4. As a ‘hard-copy’ print out by mail (double spaced and in a recognisable font.)

  5. A link to or the URL of the web site/s that you want me to proofread and edit.

Do you use any software to do the proofreading?

No, I do it myself with a trained eye.

My clients value their privacy. I don't want you knowing their names. How can I send you personal documents, such as wills, trust documents, and the like?

Simply send me such documents, with proper names replaced with  XXXXXXX. Once the document has been

satisfactorily proofread, all you have to do is FIND all the

XXXXXXX strings in the returned document, and replace them with the client's name.

What about the security of my document?

Every effort will be made to ensure that your project remains secure. However it is highly recommended that all clients retain an original copy of their manuscript. All projects will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. I have signed a copy of the Official Secrets Act and am bound by a personal code of ethics. I take a very impersonal approach to reading your document, but not to my clients. The contents of your document are forgotten as soon as I have received your approval of the final draft.

Will you sign a non-disclosure agreement?

Most likely, yes!

You have returned my document with 'redline changes'. How do I work with it when I get it back?

Note: This applies to Microsoft Word.

Open the document into Microsoft Word.

Click on the 'Tools' menu and select the 'Track Changes…' menu, move to the 'Accept or Reject changes…' menu, and click on the appropriate windows. Find the first change that I made by clicking on the right arrow. You can then choose to accept it or reject it by pressing the appropriate buttons.

You can check the changes that I made individually, or you can choose to accept all of them at once. Pull down the ‘View’ menu and cause the 'Markup' toolbar to display. In the Markup toolbar, you will see several icons. Place the mouse pointer over them until you find the one that is labelled 'Accept Change.' You can then control the choices there to accept each change, or all the changes at once.

Can you write my dissertation/thesis for me?

I do not believe that it is ethical to write a dissertation/thesis on behalf of someone else. However, if you do try and write it yourself, I can assist with editing it and helping to produce a readable document.

If you have particular difficulties with the written word, such as dyslexia and are unable to source help within your University Student Support Services, then please contact me to see if I can help in some way.
